Softball Drops Two on Opening Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game Recaps
The Canisius softball team started the 2018 season with a pair of losses on Saturday, as the team traveled to play in the CSU Dome Invite in Cleveland, Ohio. The Golden Griffins dropped the first game of the season by the score of 8-0 in six innings before falling to Cleveland State 6-3 in the nightcap. Canisius is now 0-2 to start the campaign.

In the first game on Saturday evening, Bowling Green held a 2-0 lead through four innings and then scored three times in both the fifth and sixth innings to win 8-0. Canisius had just three hits in the loss, sophomore Cassie Ho and freshmen Lindsi Dennis and Kara Paradowski each recording a base knock in the losing effort. Senior Erika Mackie took the loss for Griffs after she threw 5.2 innings with three strikeouts and three walks.

In the second game against Cleveland State, Canisius trailed the host Vikings 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Ashley Barnett helped cut the Cleveland State lead to 4-3. That would be as close as Canisius would come, however, as the Vikings would add two insurance runs in the seventh en route to the win.

Freshman pitcher Emily Nicosia took the loss in her first career start as a Griff after she allowed four runs on eight hits to go with one strikeout and three walks in five innings. Junior Lauren Castro entered the circle for two innings allowing just one hit and two runs.
