Men’s Soccer Cruises Past VMI, 5-0

BUFFALO – Junior Hunter Walsh and sophomore Troy Brady scored two goals apiece to pace Canisius to a 5-0 victory over the Virginia Military Institute in collegiate men's soccer action Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Junior Melvin Blair also scored for the Golden Griffins (2-1-0), while senior keeper Bryce Tramuta recorded two saves to post his first career shutout. Senior Jon Harrington finished with four saves for the Keydets (0-2-1).

The Griffs held a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to a Brady strike in the 31st minute before finding the back of the net four times in the second half to pull away.

Walsh began the second-half surge at the 52:21 mark, knocking home a rebound after senior Eric Struchen's initial attempt was stopped by Keydets keeper Jon Harrington.

Blair made it 3-0 just a little more than six minutes later with his second marker of the campaign. Strauchen played the ball to Blair on the right side, when he beat Harrington with a shot to the left side for his second goal of the campaign.

Walsh stretched the Canisius lead to 4-0, converting a cross from junior Giovanni Coraggioso in the 60th minute for his second goal of the contest.

Brady closed out the scoring in the final minute when he corralled a feed in the middle of the box from senior Mitch Cancilla and placed the ball in the back of the net.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"This was a well-balanced performance today. I felt that we looked very solid in the back and was pleased that we were able to get the shutout. Obviously, if you score five goals in a game you've had some great offensive production, which was also very pleasing to see."

Game Notes
  • Canisius out-shot VMI by a 28-5 margin during the contest, highlighted by a 15-1 advantage during the second half.
  • After scoring four times in the 4-3 OT victory over Robert Morris on Thursday, Canisius has now scored four or more goals in back-to-back games for the first time since Sept. 9 (Detroit-Mercy) and Sept. 14 (Cal-State Fullerton), 2012.
  • The five-goal win stands as the Griffs' largest margin of victory since Oct. 22, 1995, when the Blue and Gold defeated Saint Peter's 7-0 at home.
  • The five goals in Sunday's victory are the most for the Blue and Gold since the team defeated Rider 5-2 on the road Oct. 28, 2015.
  • Brady and Hunter Walsh become the first Canisius duo to record multiple goals in the same game since former Griffs Tony Burke and Matt Kiechle teamed to score twice each in the team's 7-0 victory over Saint Peter's during the 1995 season.
  • The shutout win for Tramuta was the first of his career, and it stands as the third win in goal for the Griffs' senior keeper.
  • Junior Giovanni Coraggioso and freshmen Manuelle Cavazzoli, Wes Rider and Lucas Slosser-Mclean all recorded their first collegiate points with assists during Sunday's contest.
  • Senior Eric Strauchen posted his first multiple-assist performance with a two-assist effort on Sunday.
