Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Defeated by Rider in MAAC Semis

Second-seeded Rider tallied three goals in an 8:13 span midway through the first half to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat No. 3 seed Canisius, 3-1, in semifinal round action in the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship Thursday at Ben Cohen Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Sylvain Coco, Pablo DeCastro and Elliott Otmani accounted for the three first-half goals for the two-time defending champion Broncs (12-4-2), who will travel to Fairfield for the championship game on Sunday. Freshman Filippo Tamburini recorded his league-leading 11th goal of the season for the Golden Griffins (12-4-4).

Tamburini staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when he converted a penalty kick opportunity that was awarded after Rider was whistled for a foul inside the box.

Coco tied the game a little more than 10 minutes after Tamburini's tally, putting a loose ball into the right side of the Canisius goal following a Rider corner kick.

DeCastro gave the Broncs a 2-1 lead at the 22:44 mark of the opening frame, curling a shot inside the far post from the left side of the box.

Otmani capped the Rider outburst a little more than four minutes later, using a Canisius turnover to get behind the Griffs defense before putting the ball past Canisius keeper Marco Trivellato for his ninth goal of the season.

Senior Lucian Preis had a chance to cut the Canisius deficit in half in the 34th minute of the first half, but his free kick from distance hit the right post and stayed out.

Trivellato got the start in goal for Canisius and made six saves. David Pastuna posted four stops between the posts for Rider.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane Postgame Comments
"It's disappointing for our season to end on such a poor performance. I did not feel that we gave a good account of ourselves tonight, but give credit to Rider for playing well.

"Overall it has been a great season with many records set. We have a lot of returning players that will be hungry to do better next year, but we will miss our seniors who have given so much to our program."
