Game Recap
Canisius senior Sabrina Fitzgerald scored her first career game-winning goal in the game's 93rd minute, as the Golden Griffins posted a 2-1 overtime win over Fairfield Saturday afternoon. The win moved Canisius to 3-4-0 overall and 1-0-0 in MAAC play, while the Stags fell to 1-8-0 overall and 0-1-0 in league play.
Canisius trailed 1-0 at the half, but tied the game at 1-1 in the 81st minute after freshman Gretta Dry took advantage of a loose ball in front of Fairfield's goal and beat Stags' keeper Jenna Pike for her third goal of the season. Fairfield made a late push at the Griffs, but freshman keeper Alana Rossi was up to the task, making three saves in the final 1:34 of regulation to force the game to overtime.
In overtime, Dry sent a crossing pass through the box, where Fitzgerald was able to put the ball in the goal to lift the Griffs to the 2-1 victory. Rossi earned her third win of the year after she made six stops, while Pike was credited two saves in the loss.
Head Coach Todd Clark's Comments
"This is a great road win and a great way to start our MAAC schedule, that's for sure. Fairfield is a good team and their well coached. It's hard to go on the road and win games in the league, so to start with a road win at a place like Fairfield - we'll gladly take it."
"At the end of the day, the only stat that matters is the final score. They had a more shots than we did, but the only ones that worry me are the quality shots. Soccer is a game of ebbs and flows. You don't get style points for having more shots or better looking chances that don't result in goals, you get points for scoring goals and winning games."
"Gretta Dry has been fantastic lately, but this win was a total team effort, and that's the way we like it. A tough, gutty, resilient effort that resulted in a league road win. I'm certainly proud of the group"
