Softball Ends Regular Season With Win at Marist

The Canisius softball team closed out the regular season on Saturday by splitting a MAAC doubleheader at Marist. The Red Foxes earned a 5-1 win in the first game before the Golden Griffins rallied to score a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.

The win over the MAAC-leading Red Foxes allowed Canisius to end the 2016 regular season with a 22-30 overall mark and a 13-7 record in league play. Canisius will learn its postseason seed and opponent in next weekend's MAAC Softball Championship at some point Sunday after the rest of the regular season comes to an end.

Game One - Marist 5, Canisius 1
Marist scored twice in the third and then added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings en route to a 5-1 victory. Canisius scored a single run in the sixth inning on a fielder's choice by junior Lindsey Silfer.

The Griffs had just four hits in the loss, with junior Jessica Berzins collecting two hits, including a double. Madi Weathers took the loss in the circle after she allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits.

Game Two - Canisius 6, Marist 3
Canisius trailed 2-1 after the Red Foxes scored twice in the home-half of the fourth, but Canisius regained the lead with two runs in the fifth and then added three insurance runs in the seventh to lift Canisius to a 6-3 victory over Marist.

Berzins went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Silfer added three hits and an RBI to the winning effort as well. Junior Samantha Sharkey had three hits for Canisius and scored three times to support Canisius starter Erika Mackie, who improved to 11-12 on the year in the circle with the victory. Mackie went the distance and allowed just three runs while giving up seven hits and fanning two.
