W. Lacrosse Finishes Syracuse Contest, Falls 13-11

The Canisius women's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 4 Syracuse this afternoon 13-11, completing the postponed matchup from Apr. 3 that was tied 10-10. The loss is the first for the Griffs in 10 games, moving their record to 11-6 to complete the regular season.

Scoring the lone goal for the Golden Griffins was sophomore Erica Evans, her 60th of the season, passing Morgan Leonard for most goals in a single-season by a Griff. With the achievement, Evans also moves to 98 career goals, only two shy of becoming the ninth Griff to reach the 100-goal milestone.

“We are really happy for Erica and her accomplishment of setting the school goals record,” said head coach Scott Teeter. “She has had one of the most productive seasons in school history and we hope she can continue her success in the MAAC Tournament this weekend.”

Today's suspended contest began with the Orange scoring on a free position shot at 3:42 to give them a 11-10 lead. The Griffs responded quickly with a goal from Evans on a setup pass from sophomore Lauren Smolensky.

Syracuse would answer with Kayla Treanor winning the ensuing draw and passing to Halle Majorana to once again put the Orange on top. Syracuse would add another goal at 1:54 to clinch the 13-11 victory.

“We put ourselves in a great position to score an upset today, and we hope that next time we can come out on the positive end against an opponent like Syracuse,” said Teeter. “We made a few mistakes that cost us, but we will clean those up and look for better results moving forward.”

Senior Taylor Giglio, who recorded three goals in the contest, led the Griffs offensively, while sophomore Allie Stewart scored twice and freshman Tessa Chad added two goals and an assist for the Griffs.

The team will now look ahead to their MAAC semifinal contest against Fairfield this Friday May 6 from the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs are set to host the tournament after winning the MAAC regular-season championship for the second consecutive season.
