Softball Splits With Long-Time Rival Niagara

The Canisius softball team split a doubleheader with long-time rival Niagara on Tuesday, taking game one by the score of 7-1 before falling in the nightcap 1-0. The Golden Griffins are now 16-28 overall and 7-5 in MAAC play.

Canisius sophomore pitcher Madi Weathers picked up her third-straight win in the circle after she scattered nine hits over seven innings while striking out four. Weathers is now 6-7 on the year.

The split of the twinbill between the two long-time rivals marks the fifth time in the last seven years where the Griffs and Purple Eagles have split their regular-season meetings. Canisius now leads the all-time series between the two schools by a 91-23-1 count.

Game One - Canisius 7, Niagara 1
The Griffs broke the game open early and Weathers was able to strand 11 Niagara runners on base as the Blue and Gold earned a 7-1 road win over the Purple Eagles.

Canisius jumped out to an early 3-0 in the top-half of the second, highlighted by a two-run triple by junior Jessica Berzins. An RBI-single by sophomore Moriah Harris in the third put the Blue and Gold up 4-0 after four frames, and then the Griffs tacked on run in the fifth and two more in the top of the seventh.

Canisius pounded out 10 hits in the win, led by freshman Lauren Castro, who had a career-high four hits, including two doubles. Berzins had two RBI and scored a run, and her triple was her MAAC-leading fifth of the season. Junior Lindsey Silfer also had two base hits for Canisius while driving in a run.

Game Two - Niagara 1, Canisius 0
Canisius was shutout for the second time in less that a week by a local rival, this time falling to Niagara by a score of 1-0. Niagara scored the game's only run in home-half of the second after a Canisius error.

The two teams combined for just nine singles in the second game, with Canisius being credited with four of them. Sophomore Erika Mackie was the tough-luck loser in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she allowed one unearned run on five hits while walking one and striking out one.

Canisius will return home Saturday, April 30, when the team plays host to Monmouth. Game one of the MAAC doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
