Game Recap: Softball | | Canisius College Athletics

Softball Sweeps Saint Peter's

The Canisius softball team moved to 5-3 in MAAC play on Saturday after the Golden Griffins went on the road and swept Saint Peter's in MAAC softball action in Jersey City, N.Y. The Griffs (14-26, 5-3 MAAC) scored a 5-2 win in the first game before knocking off the host Peacocks 8-3 in the nightcap.

The pair of wins over Saint Peter's keeps the Peacocks winless at 0-31, the nation's only winless softball team. The Griffs have defeated Saint Peter's on the softball diamond in 20 of the last 21 meetings between the two schools, dating back to 2006.

Game One - Canisius 5, Saint Peter's 2
Canisius junior Jessica Berzins drove in three runs and scored another as the Griffs scored a 5-2 win over Saint Peter's to move over the .500 mark in MAAC play for the first time this season.

Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI-single by Berzins, and she drove in two more runs in the seventh to make the score 3-0 when she roped a double to the gap in left-center. Sophomore Moriah Harris added two more insurance runs with a double down the line that pushed Berzins and senior Alexis Roman across the plate.

Berzins and Harris were the only Canisius batters to record doubles in the win, while junior Lindsey Silfer had three hits and stole a base in the win. Sophomore Erika Mackie earned the win in the circle after she allowed two runs on five hits while striking out a career-high seven.

Game Two - Canisius 8, Saint Peter's 3
Freshman Destiny Holani had two doubles and drove in a career-high three runs, and the Griffs pounded out 15 hits as a team, as the Blue and Gold fought back to earn an 8-3 win over Saint Peter's in the second game of the twinbill.

Saint Peter's scored three runs in the home-half of the first to take a 3-1 lead, and the Peacocks led 3-2 heading into the fifth, but there, Canisius responded and scored four runs with two outs in the top-half of the fifth to break the game open. In that frame, Holani had an RBI-double that pushed two runs across the plate, and Roman knocked in a run later on in the inning with a base hit to left.

Sophomore Madi Weathers earned the victory for Canisius, her fourth this season in the circle, after she allowed three runs on three hits to go with two strikeouts.

Canisius will return to action Sunday, April 24 when the team plays at Manhattan. First pitch in Riverdale, N.Y., is set for 11 a.m.
