Women's Lacrosse Cruises to 16-5 Win Over Bonnies

Five different players recorded double digit goals this afternoon, including a four goal performance from freshman Jourdan Roemer, as the Canisius women's lacrosse team defeated St. Bonaventure 16-5 from the Demske Sports Complex.

Senior Taylor Giglio, who scored three times in the contest, recorded her 100th career goal on her second goal of the game. The attacker now has 101 goals and 47 assists on her career.

"We are extremely proud of Taylor and what she has been able to accomplish during her time here," said head coach Scott Teeter. "It is a great accomplishment and she is a tremendous goal scorer."

The Griffs controlled the game against their hometown rival from the outset, scoring the game's first ten goals through twenty minutes of play. Scoring during the stretch were Giglio (2), sophomore's Erica Evans and Allie Stewart (1), and freshmen Tessa Chad and Roemer (3).  At the half the Griffs led 11-3, as sophomore Claire Bollin netted her second goal of the season.

Canisius would go on their second run of the game as the second half began, scoring the half's first four goals. During the run, Stewart and Roemer added a goal each to their total, while Evans scored two more for the Blue and Gold, giving the Griffs a commanding 15-3 lead. From there on out the Griffs would trade goals with the Bonnies with Giglio adding her third goal of the game.

“Coming off of the victory over Fairfield last week, I thought we rode that momentum into today's performance,” said Teeter. “The elements were a little sloppy, but we really had the game under control within the first ten or so minutes.”

Both goalkeepers, sophomore Rebecca VanLaeken, and freshman Ellen Newton, saw action in the victory, with VanLaeken recording the win on two saves. Newton would add four saves playing in net for the Griffs during the second half.

Roemer's four goals led all scoring for the Golden Griffins, while three other Griffs, Chad, Evans and Giglio recorded three apiece. Giglio led the team in points with six.

Also impressing for Canisius was sophomore Megan Maloney, who recorded a team high eight draw controls along with two caused turnovers.

“It was good to see that we got everyone into the game today and really had balance across the board,” said Teeter. “We were able to try and few different things and reward those who have been working hard in practice.”

The Blue and Gold will travel to Hamden, Conn. this Saturday Apr. 2 at 1 p.m., as they take on the Quinnipiac Bobcats.
