The Canisius women's Lacrosse team fell to No. 18 Ohio State this afternoon 10-4 from Columbus, OH., moving the team's record to 2-4.
The Griffs held their own throughout the first half of action, against the eighteenth ranked team in the nation, heading into the half down 4-2.
The game began with Ohio State taking a 1-0 lead at 24:30, but the Blue and Gold quickly responded, as sophomore Megan Maloney scored her second goal of the season to tie the score at one all. The Buckeyes would go on a 3-1 run throughout the rest of the first half, with sophomore Allie Stewart recording the Golden Griffins second goal of the contest at 9:13, her ninth of the season.
Ohio State came out of the halftime break as the stronger team, going on a 3-0 run, before sophomore Erica Evans recorded her team-high 13th goal of the season at 15:25 in the second half. Evans would again score at 5:41 to close the gap to 8-4, but the effort was not enough, as the Buckeyes responded with two more goals of their own, getting their seventh victory of the season by a score of 10-4.
With her two goals Evans now has 14 on the season through her first six games of action, and has scored in four of the team's first six games. Goal Keeper Rebecca VanLaeken recorded her second highest total for saves on the season, with 10, and has a total of 38 on the season .
The Golden Griffins will next travel to New York City, as the will face the Columbia Lions of the Ivy League at 3 p.m., this Monday Mar. 21. The game will be the first ever matchup between the two opponents.
Game Notes: The Golden Griffins move to 1-2 on the road this season… VanLaeken is now 2-3 overall, with a 10.20 GAA, good for second in the MAAC… Stewart's ninth goal has her tied for third on the team in goals and she is alone at third in points… Evans stays as the team-leader in goals and points with 14 and 17 respectively… Evans led the team in draw controls and caused turnovers this afternoon as she recorded three apiece… Junior Janae Guy led the Griffs in ground balls with five… Canisius is now 1-7 lifetime against Ohio St.
