Game Recap
Sophomore Melaine Linsmair scored the game-winning goal in overtime in the 95th minute as the Griffs won 1-0 at Saint Peter's Wednesday afternoon. The goal came off a corner kick from fellow classmate Emily Czechowski who put a shot in front of the net and Linsmair put the ball in. Freshman goalkeeper Alana Rossi had an easy time in net as she only saw four balls come her way, stopping all four shots. The win moves the Golden Griffins to 7-7-0 overall and 5-3-0 in MAAC play.
The Griffs controlled the match statistically, as they unloaded 15 shots towards the net with seven going on goal. Whereas, the Peacocks discharged 11 balls towards the goal with only four registering as shots on goal. Also Canisius had five corner kicks to Saint Peter's four.
Canisius' shot production came mostly from Linsmair as she aimed four shots of the Griffs 15 near the net with two going on goal, including the game-winner.
Coach Clark Postgame Comments
“It was a very difficult game. Saint Peter's gets a lot of the credit. They played very hard for their seniors on Senior Day… we missed a few opportunities late in the game due to, maybe, a lack of focus. We're still trying to figure out what it takes to close the deal consistently, but as my assistant Lew Potter made mention, 'somtimes the sign of a growing team and a good team is that they can win in spite of not playing their absolute best'... I'm very pleased with the win… going into overtime we talked about how every mistake, every poor decision we made, we can erase it in one moment in overtime with a goal and that's what we did. We ended up scoring a real quality goal… Mel [Linsmair] and Emily [Czechowski] combined for a pretty quality goal. It's nice to be in this situation. Everything we do from here on out is a place that Canisius hasn't been in recent times and that's exciting for the current group.”
