After leading the Canisius College men's soccer team to a season-opening victory, senior captain Ryan Schroen collected MAAC Defensive Player of the Week accolades, announced by the conference on Monday.
In Sunday's 1-0 victory against NJIT, Schroen netted his first collegiate goal to lift the team to the win in the season opener. His goal from the penalty spot in the 74th minute was the game's only tally – his first career goal in his 53rd collegiate game.
Schroen also played a key role in keeping the clean sheet on the defensive end. The Griffs held the Highlanders to just seven total shots in the 90 minutes of action – less than half their season average from a season ago.
Schroen and the Griffs look to continue their winning ways with a road contest against local rival Buffalo on Tuesday. The two schools are set to meet at UB Stadium at 7 p.m. with the Big 4 Shield on the line.
