Softball Falls Twice to Monmouth

The host Monmouth Hawks kept their postseason hopes alive with a MAAC doubleheader sweep of Canisius Saturday afternoon at MU Softball Park in West Long Branch, N.J. The Hawks scored an 8-1 win in game one and then posted an 8-4 win in game two to move to 14-23, 10-8 in the MAAC, while the Golden Griffins fell to 24-17, 13-5 in conference play.

Despite losing twice on Saturday, Canisius will head into the final day of the regular season tied at the top of the MAAC standings with its 13-5 record. The Griffs are tied with both Manhattan and Fairfield, and those two teams will face-off against one another at Fairfield tomorrow at noon.

In game one, both teams scored a run in the first, but Monmouth broke the game open with a six-spot in the fourth inning en route to the 8-1. Monmouth starter Sydney Underhill earned the game one victory after she allowed just four Canisius hits while striking out five. Canisius sophomore Lindsey Silfer went 2-for-3 in the loss while freshman Moriah Harris also had a hit in the losing effort.

In the nightcap, Monmouth picked up the 8-4 win over Canisius and moved into sixth-place in the MAAC standings heading into the final day of the regular season. Canisius lead 4-0 after scoring three runs in the first and adding a run in the second on an RBI-triple by sophomore Jessica Berzins, but Monmouth again used a big inning to take the lead. The Hawks scored seven times in the bottom-half of the second and then added another run in the third.

Canisius had 11 hits and left 10 runners on base in the game two loss. Berzins had three hits, including a triple, a run scored and an RBI while junior Meghan Cuda added two hits and a run scored to the losing effort. Harris also had two hits in the second game, while sophomore Samantha Sharkey drove in two runs.

Canisius will close out the regular season at Rider on Sunday. Game time in Lawrenceville, N.J., is set for 12 p.m.
