Women's Lacrosse Wins Eleventh Straight

The Golden Griffins women's lacrosse team won it's 11th straight game this afternoon, as the Blue and Gold traveled to Binghamton, N.Y., and defeated the Binghamton Bearcats, 12-8. The victory for the Griffs improves the team to 12-5 on the season, while the loss drops Binghamton to 6-11.

The game against the Bearcats was a nice tune-up for the team before they host the MAAC semifinals and finals next weekend at the Demske Sports Complex. As a team, the Blue and Gold performed well leading the Binghamton team in almost all categories.

As a team, the Griffs out-shot the Bearcats 30-23, had 10 saves compared to the host team's 8, had 20 ground balls to Binghamton's 18 and had 12 draw controls to their 10.

Individually, the team was led by freshman Lauren Smolensky who had a team leading five points on the day. Smolensky had three goals and two assists and also recorded five ground balls in the victory. Behind the freshman was senior captain, Tori Quinn who had four points of her own on two goals and two assists and also had three ground balls, four draw controls and a caused turnover.

Seven other Griffs found the back of the goal in the road game, including Ashley Bull, Sami Franco, Meghan Cuddy, Erica Evans, Taylor Giglio, Allie Stewart and Caroline Ogden

In goal for the Blue and Gold was senior leader Kayla Scully for the first half and freshman Rebecca VanLaeken for the second half. Scully got the victory in goal for Canisius, making five saves and allowing only one first half goal for the Bearcats. VanLaeken recorded five saves as well and got same valuable time in goal to give Scully some rest before the MAAC Championships.

For the Bearcats, the team was led by attacker Brianne Arthur who scored three goals and Sophia Racciatti who had two of her own. Goalkeeper Erin McNulty made eight saves in the game, but ultimately received the loss for the home team, allowing 12 goals.

This was the final regular season game for the Griffs, as the team will face MAAC foe Marist in the semifinals at the Demske Sports Complex. The game will be the second game on Friday, May 1, with game-time scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
