Softball Swept at Siena

The Canisius softball team saw its 10-game MAAC winning streak come to an end on Saturday, as the Golden Griffins were swept at Siena by scores of 6-2 and 6-5. The Griffs are now 19-14 overall on the season and 8-2 in MAAC play, while Siena improved to 12-18-1, 6-4 in conference action.

In the first game, Siena jumped out to a 4-0 lead through five innings before Canisius finally got on the scoreboard. In the top of the sixth, Canisius junior Alexis Roman doubled to drive in a run and then sophomore Lindsey Silfer drove in a run with a base hit to right. Siena answered Canisius' two runs with two runs of its own in the home-half of the sixth to secure the 6-2 victory.

Canisius had five hits in the game-one loss, with Roman and sophomore Jessica Berzins each recording a double. Freshman pitcher Erika Mackie took the loss in the circle after she allowed six runs on 12 hits while walking three and striking out one.

In the second game, Canisius led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Saints scored three times to secure the win, Siena's fifth win over Canisius in their last six meetings, dating back to the 2013 season. With the score tied at 3-3 in the top-half of the seventh, junior Bethany DeMarco scored on a wild pitch to give the Griffs a 4-3 lead, and moments later, Berzins drove in a run with a single to center to give Canisius a 5-3 lead.

Siena knotted the game at 5-5 in the seventh on a two-run home run by Abby Carpenter, and the Saints were able to put the game-winning run on third with no one out. Alyssa Lancaster was able to drive in the winning run with an infield field off Mackie, who came on in relief of starter Madi Weathers following Paige Hess' double to right. Weathers took the loss after she allowed six runs, all earned, on 13 hits while fanning five.

Canisius will return to action April 23, as the team starts an eight-game homestand when Niagara comes to the Demske Sports Complex. Game time between the two long-time rivals is set for 3 p.m.
