Canisius senior Robin Kennery had two hits and drove in a pair of runs and junior pitcher Carey Seeger earned her first career victory in the circle as the Golden Griffins defeated Robert Morris 5-1 in a non-league softball game Wednesday afternoon in Moon Township, Pa. The win, Canisius' seventh straight, improved to the Blue and Gold to 13-9 on the season, while the Colonials fell to 16-14 with the loss.
Canisius loaded the bases in the top of the first and scored one run when sophomore Lindsey Silfer ripped one back up the middle to drive in teammate Jessica Berzins. After Robert Morris tied the game at 1-1 in the home-half of the first on a solo homer by Kristen Gabelt, Canisius took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the fourth. In that frame, Silfer scored on a wild pitch and junior Meghan Cuda was able to scamper home from third when Berzins attempted to steal second base with two outs.
The Griffs added single runs in the fifth and sixth, with Kennery earning RBI in both frames. In the fifth, the senior from Williamsville, N.Y., made the score 4-1 in favor of the Blue and Gold when she hit an RBI double to the gap in left-center that allowed sophomore Samantha Sharkey to cross the plate, and in the sixth, Kennery drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to make the score 5-1.
Canisius banged out seven hits in the win off Robert Morris starter Haileigh Stocks, who saw her record move to 3-5 this season after she allowed five runs, four earned, while walking seven and striking out three. Seeger earned the win in her first career start after she allowed just one run on three hits in four innings. Freshman Erika Mackie picked up her team-leading third save of the year after she threw three scoreless innings and struck out two in three innings of action.
Canisius will open the home portion of its 2015 schedule on Tuesday, April 7, when the team plays host to Detroit at the Demske Sports Complex. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m.
