The Canisius College women's lacrosse team shut-down two of the nation's premier scorers en route to an 8-4 victory on Wednesday evening over the Delaware Blue Hens. The victory improved Canisius to 4-5 on the season and was their third consecutive victory, while the loss drops Delaware to 7-4 overall.
Head coach Scott Teeter was proud of how his team performed, especially on the defensive end. "It's a good character win for us. I thought we made the neccesary adjustments at the half and we did an excellent job of eliminating their big guns on offense."
Junior Sami Franco and the defense held the Blue Hens top two-scorers in Casey Lyons and Catlin McCartney to just five shots and three turnovers. The team also held the Blue Hens without a goal for the final 34:26 of action.
Franco also recorded three ground balls and had two caused turnovers in the game. The Griffs also held the Blue Hens third leading scorer, McKenzie Rafferty to just two shots in the game.
Canisius went into the half, down 4-2 and then went on a 6-0 run to end the game. After scoring the team's first goal of the game,junior Ashley Bull scored the teams first two goals of the second half, tying the game at four goals each. Taylor Giglio, Tori Quinn and Erica Evans scored the Griffs final four goals of the game leading to the 8-4 victory.
Senior Kayla Scully notched her third victory of the season, and third in a row after playing all 60 minutes and making nine saves.
The next game for the Griffs will be on Saturday when the team travels to Riverdale, N.Y., to take on MAAC foe Manhattan at 11:00 a.m.
Game Notes: The three goals by Evans was her fourth game in a row with at least three goals...the match-up between the Griffs and Blue Hens was the first meeting all-time between the two teams...the nine saves by Scully were a season high for the goalkeeper...head coach Scott Teeter is now 1-0 in his career as a father.
