In their first home game of the 2015 season the Canisius College Golden Griffins hosted nationally ranked Ohio State at the Demske Sports Complex and despite a strong effort, the Griffs ultimately fell to the Buckeyes 21-14.
Canisius was led offensively today by junior Taylor Giglio who scored three goals and also recorded four assists. Besides Giglio, freshman Erica Evans scored four goals, Tori Quinn had three goals and Lauren Smolensky was the other Griff with multiple scores, netting two of her own.
The Griffs started the game out hot, scoring three of the games first four goals within the first eight minutes of action, including two from Quinn within the first two minutes of play. For the remaining 20 minutes of the half, the two teams would battle back and forth with the Buckeyes taking a 12-7 lead into halftime.
Besides Quinn, the first half goals included three from Evans, one from Caroline Ogden and one from Giglio.
Heading back from halftime, the Griffs would look to cut into the Buckeyes lead as Smolensky scored the first goal of the second half, cutting the visitors lead down to 12-8. But that would be the closest the Griffs would come as Ohio State scored six goals in a row to take a 10 point lead with 16:17 left on the clock.
In the final 16 minutes of action the Griffs outscored the Buckeyes 4-1, but the late effort wouldn't be enough as the team ultimately fell 21-14.
Freshman Rebecca VanLaeken got the start in goal for the Griffs and the keeper made two saves in a losing effort, falling to 1-2 on the season.
Game Notes: With her four points today Tori Quinn moves to fourth all-time in points for Canisius as she now has 198, just five shy of her sister's school record 203...her one assist also moved her to tied for third all-time with 69...this was the seventh consecutive season the Griffs have played Ohio State...after playing Ohio State last season, the Griffs went on a 10-4 run to close out the year and win their fourth straight MAAC Championship.
