Despite five goals from junior Taylor Giglio, the Golden Griffins women's lacrosse team fell to Ivy League opponent Yale on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 12-8. The game, which was played in New Haven, Conn., was the Griffs fourth game of the season, with the prior three all coming against nationally ranked teams.
The loss drops the Blue and Gold to 0-4 on the season and the victory moves Yale to 2-1 overall.
Giglio's give goals came on seven shots with the first one coming at the 20 minute mark of the first half. Canisius went into the half, down 7-3. The Griffs other two goals in the first half came from seniors Tori Greco, her first of the season and Tori Quinn her eighth of the year.
In the second half, the Blue and Gold and the Bulldogs went back and forth, both scoring five goals each en route to the final 12-8 score. Besides Giglio's four second-half goals, the other Griff to score was Quinn who netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Senior Kayla Scully got the start for the Blue and Gold and received the loss after giving up seven first half goals and making three saves. Coming in for Scully's relief was freshman Rebecca VanLaeken who played the second half and allowed five goals while making three saves.
The Golden Griffins next game will be not too far from home, as the Griffs travel to Olean, N.Y., on March 10, when the Blue and Gold take on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies in a mid-week contest.
