Softball Splits Doubleheader with Miami (Ohio)

The Canisius College softball team snapped its losing streak on Sunday with a 6-2 win in the opening game of a double header with Miami (Ohio). The Blue and Gold would split the day after falling 3-2 in eight innings in game two.

The Griffs got off to a fast start in game one, with sophomore Bethany DeMarco blasted a three-run home run in the top of the first. Freshman Jessica Berzins (walk) and junior Robin Kennery (double) scored on the play.

The three runs were all senior Jen Consaul would need as she allowed just two runs (one earned) on the day.

Sophomore Megan Cuda tacked on a home run of her own in the fourth, followed by Roman and Kennery RBI singles in the fifth to give Canisius its highest run total since scoring 11 in the season opener.

Freshman Sarah Andrews got the start in the circle for game two, allowing two runs through seven innings.

The RedHawks struck first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead after the first, but Canisius would rally in the fifth as Kennery came up with a two-rbi single to give the Griffs the lead. Junior Michelle DelPrince (walk) and sophomore Alexis Roman (double) scored on the play.

The score would hold until the bottom of the seventh, when Miami would load the bases in the inning. Andrews allowed a bases loaded walk with one out to tie the game but escaped further damage.

Consaul came on to pitch the eighth, and allowed the RedHawks to plate the game-winner, resulting to split the double-header.

Canisius will now begin an 11-game road trip to California. The Griffs will first take part in the Titan Classic, against host Cal State Fullerton, Texas Tech, DePaul and UNLV. Action will get underway at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 14.
