Samuels and Coughlin Collect MAAC Weekly Honors

Helping lead the Canisius College men's soccer team to two important conference victories last week, senior Asani Samuels and junior Andrew Coughlin were named the MAAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, on Monday.

The duo helped the Griffs to back-to-back conference victories against Rider, 4-1, and first-place Iona on Saturday, 2-0. The win over the Gaels on Saturday marked Canisius' first regular-season victory over its conference foe since 2004, while the duo also helped the Griffs to back-to-back MAAC victories for the first time since 2009.

In the two winning efforts, Samuels recorded five points, two goals and one assist. The Savanna la Mar, Jamaica native matched his career best with three points against Rider, netting one goal to go along with one assist. He then helped the Griffs end a nine-game regular-season losing streak to Iona with a first-half tally against the conference's first place team, ending the Gaels' 419:33 shutout streak.

Samuels leads the Griffs with 14 points and six goals during his senior campaign. He is currently tied for first in the MAAC with his six goals and with three game-winning tallies.

Coughlin anchored a strong Canisius defense during the week, holding two of the top three scoring offenses in the MAAC to just one combined goal. In Wednesday's victory over Rider, Coughlin held the nation's 10th-ranked scoring offense to more than a goal less than its season average, recording four saves. He then kept a clean sheet with three stops against the unbeaten Gaels. With his three saves, Coughlin recorded his fifth shutout of the season, setting a new school record.

A junior transfer, Coughlin owns a 7-3-2 record in his first season with the Griffs, posting a 0.88 goals against average and .780 save percentage. In addition to his school-record five shutouts, the Baldwinsville, N.Y. native is on pace to set the school's goals against average and goaltender wins records.

Samuels, Coughlin and the Griffs look to continue their winning ways in MAAC play at Siena on Wednesday. The schools are set to meet in Loudonville, N.Y. at 3 p.m.
