Canisius College freshman Meghan Cuda has been named the MAAC Softball Rookie of the Week,
the conference office announced today. Cuda is the second Canisius newcomer to
win this award in 2013, joining with teammate Bethany DeMarco, who was honored Feb. 25.
Cuda hit
.429 (6-for-14) with three triples, three runs scored and four RBIs last week
as the Golden Griffins took part in the Lady Pirate Classic in Hampton, Va.,
March 8-9. She went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored in the team's 6-1
loss to Central Connecticut State March 8 and she followed that game by going
4-for-6 with two triples, two runs scored and four runs batted in in the team's
15-2 win over Maryland Eastern-Shore March 9. She posted a .429 on-base
percentage and an .857 slugging percentage last week and was credited with five
fielding assists as the team's primary third baseman.
Through
her first 12 career collegiate games, Cuda ranks third on the team with her
.349 batting average and she leads the MAAC with her four triples. Her 24 total
bases this season ranks top-five in the MAAC and she's one of the league's top
base stealers with her team leading five stolen bases.
The
Griffs are 8-4 on the season and will return to action March 15-17 at the
George Mason Cherry Blossom Classic in Fairfax, Va. Canisius is scheduled to
play five games this weekend, starting March 15 at 12:15 p.m., when the Blue
and Gold takes on Pittsburgh.
