Canisius College junior pitcher Jen Consaul and freshman third baseman Bethany DeMarco were honored by the
MAAC on Monday, as Consaul was named the league's Pitcher of the Week and
DeMarco was tabbed as the conference's Rookie of the Week.
This marks
the second time Consaul has been named the MAAC's Pitcher of the Week, as she
was also honored April 23, 2012. DeMarco is the first freshman on this year's
roster to be recognized for her play by the conference. Together, Consaul and
DeMarco have helped the Golden Griffins to the
program's best start to a season since 1994.
Consaul
has started her junior campaign with a 3-1 record to go with a save and a 1.12
ERA in six appearances. The Chili, N.Y., native picked up her first win of the
season Feb. 17 in Canisius' 10-2 win over St. Bonaventure and then she went on
to earn wins against St. Francis (Pa.) and North Carolina A&T Feb. 24. In
the win over North Carolina A&T, her 20th career win in the circle as a
Griff, she fanned a career-high 11 batters and gave up just two hits en route
to her sixth career shutout win. Consaul leads the Griffs' pitching staff with
25.0 innings of action where she has fanned 22 batter, and opponents are
hitting just .187 off her this season.
DeMarco
started her college career off on the right foot as she hit .462 (6-for-13)
with a double, five RBIs and two runs scored in five games through Feb. 24.
After going hitless in her first two career games, the Victor, N.Y., native
picked up her first career base hit against Bucknell Feb. 17 and then followed
that with a 3-for-4 performance against St. Francis (Pa.) Feb. 24 where she
drove in four runs and scored once in the team's 10-4 win over the Red Flash.
She also had two hits against North Carolina A&T Feb. 24, highlighted by
her first career extra base hit to go with an RBI and a run scored.
Defensively, she has 13 putouts and seven assists and she has not committed an
error in 20 fielding chances.
The
Griffs played two games on Monday on the final day of the North Carolina
A&T Invitational and won both games to improve the team's record to 7-1 on
the year. The Blue and Gold will have a week off before the team travels to
Hampton, Va., March 8-9 to take part in the Hampton Pirate Invitational.
