Griffs Earn All-Western New York Accolades

Five of members of the Canisius College men's soccer team were honored by Upper 90 Magazine, which selected the top college players in Western New York on Friday.

Senior Ryan Arvin was selected as Western New York Goalkeeper of the Year and was joined on the All-Western New York First Team by junior midfielder Denver Spearman. Senior midfielder Will Hudson and junior forward Asani Samuels each earned second-team accolades, while rookie defender Thomas Teupen collected All-Freshman Team honors.

Arvin anchored the Canisius defense from the goalkeeper position, finishing his career with three school records. The senior posted a 1.18 goals against average in 26 career games, easily surpassing the previous mark of 1.43. Arvin also set the program's standard with a 1.08 goals against average during the 2013 season, while matching the record of four single-season shutouts.

Spearman finished tied for second on the team with eight points in 2013, recording three goals and two assists. The team's anchor in the midfield, Spearman has recorded 23 points in his three seasons at Canisius, netting eight goals to go along with seven assists.

Hudson led the Griffs with 13 points in 2013, matching his career-best total. The senior netted a personal-best six goals in his final campaign to go along with one assist. He also led the team with three game-winning goals – including two in conference play. Hudson finished his career at Canisius with 30 points, 12 goals and six assists.

Selected to the All-MAAC Second Team on Thursday, Samuels finished tied for second on the team with eight points, three goals and two assists. The junior forward, who excels at stretching the opponent's defense, also became just the second player in school history with two overtime goals in the same season. Samuels has posted 19 career points on eight goals and three assists.

In his first season at Canisius, Teupen helped anchor the Canisius defense from the center back position. He scored one goal in 18 contests, while helping the team register four shutouts during the campaign. Teupen was also named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team on Thursday night.

The Griffs finished the 2013 campaign with a 7-9-2 overall record, placing sixth in the MAAC with 10 points during conference play. Canisius' 15 wins in the last two seasons are tied for the most in any two-year span in the program's history.
