Canisius College softball coach Mike Rappl announced today that Alexis Roman (Chino, Calif) and Jenn Solis (LaPuente, Calif.) will join
the Golden Griffins' softball for the 2012-13 academic year.
Roman and Solis will join Meghan Cuda (Lewiston, N.Y.), Bethany DeMarco (Victor, N.Y.), Torri Nappo (Clarence, N.Y.) and Brenda Santana (Long Beach, Calif.) to
make up the team's 2012-13 freshman class.
"Alexis and Jenn help us complete
what we believe is a very strong freshman class," Rappl said. "We have added a
lot of speed, quickness, power and tournament-tested experience to our program.
We are excited to have this class join our program and we look forward to
getting back to the top of the MAAC in 2013."
Roman is a middle infielder who is
currently closing out her senior year at Don Lugo High School in Chino, Calif.
A three-time All-Mount Baldy all-star, she helped lead the Conquistadors to a
conference championship in 2011. A career .300 hitter, Roman is the daughter of
Mary and Junior Roman, and she plans on majoring in kinesiology at the College.
"Alexis is a slick-fielding
infielder with great range," Rappl said. "She makes tough plays look routine
and she has the ability to be a slap-hitter or to swing away in the batter's
box. She has really good speed and a good awareness on the base paths as well."
Solis is a four-year letterwinner
at Los Altos High School in Hacienda Heights, Calif., and she closed out the
2012 regular season with a 13-2 record and a 1.23 ERA, as the Conquerors
clinched the Hacienda League championship. A two-time first-team all-league
honoree, Solis is the daughter of John Solis and Yolanda Estrada, and she plans
on majoring in athletic training at Canisius next fall.
"Jenn is a scrappy pitcher with a
great demeanor and really good movement," Rappl said. "She throws hard for her
size, and she has been successful at every level of travel ball and throughout
her high school career."
The Canisius softball team
closed out the 2012 season with a 20-30 overall record and an 11-5 mark in MAAC
play, which earned the Griffs' the No. 3 seed in the 2012 MAAC Softball
Championship. The postseason appearance marked the 21st time in the
last 23 years that the Blue and Gold have earned a berth in the conference's
postseason event. Canisius will return 10 position players and three pitchers
to next year's roster.
