Canisius College freshman Robin Kennery was
named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Rookie of the Week on Tuesday
after she hit .458 (11-for-24) with three doubles, two runs scored and eight
RBIs as the Golden Griffins went 4-2 in six games last week. This marks the
first weekly honor for the Williamsville North High School graduate.
In Canisius'
1-0, 10-inning win over Mount St. Mary's in the 2012 home opener April 5, the
rookie infielder drove home the game-winning RBI with a one-out base hit to
left centerfield to give Canisius the victory in the longest home game in
program history. She added two more runs batted in against Mount St. Mary's in
the nightcap, highlighted by her two doubles, and she was credited with three
hits and two RBIs in her first career MAAC games April 7, when the team played
host to Siena.
Kennery went a combined 5-for-8 with
a double and three RBIs at Robert Morris April 9, and she starts the team's
upcoming homestand tied for the team lead with 19 RBIs through her first 30
collegiate games. She struck out just one time in 26 at-bats last week and
added 23 putouts and 16 fielding assists defensively for the Griffs from second
base.
Canisius will start a five-game
homestand on Wednesday, April 11, when the team plays host to cross-town rival
Buffalo, with the single-game set to begin at 3 p.m., at the Demske Sports
Complex. The Griffs will return to MAAC action on Saturday, April 14, when the
team hosts Fairfield and will close out the weekend Sunday, April 15, when Iona
comes to the Demske for a MAAC twinbill. Both weekend doubleheaders are
scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
