Softball Announces Four Sign NLIs for 2013

Canisius College softball coach Mike Rappl announced today that Meghan Cuda (Lewiston, N.Y.), Bethany DeMarco (Victor, N.Y.), Torri Nappo (Clarence Center, N.Y.) and Brenda Santana (Long Beach, Calif.) have all signed their National Letters of Intent and will join the Golden Griffin softball program for the 2013 season.

Cuda is currently in her senior year at Lewiston Porter High School, where she started playing for the varsity team as a freshman. As a shortstop for the Lancers, she has earned first-team all-league, first-team All-Western New York Large School and fourth-team all-state accolades. A left-handed hitter that can drive the ball, she is known for her speed, both on the base paths and on defense. She is also a varsity basketball player at Lewiston Porter High where she plays point guard. The daughter of Joe and Rita Cuda, she plans on majoring in athletic training at the College.

DeMarco is currently in her senior year at Victor Senior High School, where she has earned four varsity letters for the Blue Devils' softball program. In her junior season, she hit .520 with 30 RBIs, while posting a .560 on-base percentage and an .815 slugging percentage. After her junior season, she was named to the All-Greater Rochester (N.Y.) All-Star Team, while also earning first-team all-league and first-team all-county honors. She was recognized as a Section V All-Tournament Team honoree in 2010. A power hitter that hits for a high average at the plate, DeMarco has quick hands and a strong arm in the field, where she is primarily a catcher and plays third base. The daughter of Mike and Kathy DeMarco, she plans to major in biology at Canisius.

Tori Nappo will join her sister Valorie on the Griffs' roster next season after she closes out her scholastic playing career at Clarence High School. A four-year varsity letterwinner as an outfielder, she hit .440 last season and ended the year by being named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) 2011 Louisville Slugger High School East Region First Team. She was one of 48 players nationally to earn All-American status, as chosen by the NFCA in 2011, and she earned all-state and All-WNY accolades as well. She has a great knowledge of the game, and she has outstanding range in the outfield with a strong, accurate arm. The daughter of Steve and Nancy Nappo, Tori plans on majoring in business at the College.

Santana continues the long-line of California natives to play for the Griffs, and she is in her senior year at Banning High School in Long Beach, Calif. A first and third baseman, she is a strong, powerful hitter with a great eye and quick hands at the plate. She is considered one of the top hitting prospects in Southern California, and those quick hands translate into the field as well. The daughter of Fred and Liz Santana, she plans on majoring in special education at the College.

The 2012 Canisius softball team returns six regular position players, three pitchers and 11 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 20-21 overall and 7-9 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. The Griffs will open the 2012 season Friday, Feb. 10, when the team takes on Drexel at noon on the first day of the ECU Pirate Classic in Greenville, N.C.
