Canisius College softball coach Mike Rappl announced today Erica Afanador (San Jose, Calif.) and Corinne Schaus (Naples, Fla.) have
signed their National Letter of Intent and will join the Golden Griffins'
roster for the 2012 season.
Afanador is currently in her
senior season at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Calif., where she
plays shortstop for the Monarchs. A four-year letterwinner, she is hitting .303
while her team boasts a 22-2 overall record and a 10-1 mark in the West
Catholic Softball Conference. The Monarchs are currently ranked No. 33 in the
nation according to MaxPreps and they are also the eighth-ranked team in the
state of California. Afanador is the daughter of Ernest and Imee Afanador, and
she plans on majoring in business administration at Canisius.
Schaus is a pitcher, plays first
base and in the outfield for the Barron Collier High School Cougars. A two-time
team captain and an all-state selection after the 2010 season, Schaus has a
career batting average of .345 to go with a 1.30 ERA in the circle. She helped
lead her team to a 22-10 record this season before the team lost in the
regional championship game by a score of 1-0 in 11 innings May 3. Schaus, who
was born in Lake Forest, Ill., is no stranger to Canisius, as both of her
parents and 11 other relatives graduated from the College. Her father Mike
played football at Canisius and her mother, Carolyn (Gillbride) Schaus, played
basketball and softball in her time as a Griff. Her older sister Kristen struck
out over 800 batters in her softball career at Princeton, and her brother Jeff
is currently a senior outfielder for the Clemson baseball team. She plans on
studying education at Canisius.
Afanador and Schaus will join Sonia Aguilar (Nuevo, Calif.), Michelle DelPrince (Lancaster, N.Y.)
and Robin Kennery (Williamsville, N.Y.)
on the roster next season. Aguilar, DelPrince and Kennery all signed their
National Letter of Intent to join the program during the NCAA's early signing
period last November.
Canisius (19-20, 6-8 MAAC) will
close out the 2011 regular season on the road May 7, when the team takes on
Rider. First pitch in the MAAC doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
