Swimming and Diving Set for Cleveland Dual Meet Invite

For a second consecutive year, the Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams will travel to Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday evening to face host Cleveland State, John Carroll, and Notre Dame College at the Cleveland Dual Meet Invite.

Last season, the Canisius men's team swept John Carroll and Notre Dame College by the scores of 166-76 and 146-91, respectively. The women split with both teams last year, falling to Notre Dame College, 119-103, while gaining a decisive win over John Carroll, 148-66.

Both Canisius squads will look to capture their first dual meet victory over Horizon League opponent Cleveland State. The Vikings have walked away victorious over the Golden Griffins for five straight years. At last year's Cleveland Dual Meet Invite, the Vikings defeated the women, 186-54, and the men, 169-64.

Entering this year's Invite, Cleveland State has captured three of the four league honors for men's and women's swimmers and divers of the week in consecutive weeks. This season, both the Viking men and women have defeated Little Three rivals St. Bonaventure and Niagara.

The Canisius women are coming off a 136-69 fall to Duquesne on Nov. 18. For the second straight dual, freshman Marissa Oakey finished first in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle races. Her most impressive win of the day, came in the 1000 freestyle, as the freshman finished nearly 30 seconds ahead of any other competitor with a time of 10:34.12. In the 200 backstroke, sophomores Leah Villari and Maggie DeMarco finished second and third, respectively. In addition, sophomore Kelli Graber posted a second-place finish in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.

On the other hand, the Canisius men have not competed as a squad since their season-opening victory over MAAC opponent Marist at the Burt Flickinger Center on Nov. 4. Senior Steve Pochatko, juniors Matt Moessinger and Shawn Parkhurst, and Tyler Carver each captured first-place finishes to lead the Griffin men to victory. In addition, Moessinger set the school record in the 100 fly with a time of 51.22.
