Canisius College senior Michelle Fridey tied the school's
single-season RBI record by driving in a run in the top of the third, but it
was not enough to help the Golden Griffins push past Buffalo, as the host Bulls
posted a 4-3 non-conference win Wednesday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field. The
loss ended Canisius' seven-game winning streak and dropped the team to 26-15
overall, while Buffalo improved to 15-30 with the victory.
Fridey drove in her MAAC-leading 47th
run of the season in the third inning on a double to left center that allowed
freshman Katie Medina to score from
second base. With Canisius trailing 3-0 in the third, Medina reached base with
a one-out double of her own, and after she scored, Fridey was able to move to
third base on a wild pitch by Buffalo pitcher Terese Diaz. Fridey would step on
the plate moments later when sophomore Katie
Lancellotti ripped a base hit to right.
Canisius tied the game at 3-3 in the
top of the fifth when junior Lauren Hope
was able to manufacture a run. Hope led off the frame with her seventh
double of the year and then moved to third on a wild pitch. She would tie the
game when she raced home on a passed ball to score her 35th run of
the season, which is tied for the team lead with Fridey.
In the bottom of the seventh inning,
the Bulls were able to take advantage of a Canisius error to set up the game's
winning run. Pinch hitter Candice Sheehan reached on an error at the start of
the frame, and then teammate Ashley Bertot moved her to second with a bunt-base
hit. After a double steal moved pinch runner Kristen Gallipani to third and
Bertot to second, Taylor Franich was able to put the ball in ball to allow
Gallipani to score.
Canisius freshman Amanda Baun took the loss in relief for
the Griffs after she allowed one run on one hit while fanning three in two
innings of work. Starter Caroline Main
gave up three runs on two hits while striking out three in four innings. All
four of Buffalo's runs were unearned. Diaz went the distance for UB and
collected seven strikeouts to go with three runs on seven hits as she improved
to 4-11 in the circle.
The Griffs will return to MAAC
action on Saturday when the team plays host to Fairfield. First pitch at the
Demske Sports Complex is set for 12 p.m.
