The Canisius College softball team improved to 9-7 on the season with a pair of non-league wins over Army and Binghamton Saturday afternoon at the Colonial Classic, hosted by George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The Golden Griffins started the two-day event by beat Army 10-2 in six innings before rallying to score two in the seventh for a 3-2 win over Binghamton. The Blue and Gold have now won three of their last four games and nine of their last 11 outings overall.
In the come-from-behind win over Binghamton (2-4) led 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Griffs scored a single-run. In the seventh, Canisius loaded the bases with three-straight base hits off the bats of Emily Helbig, Katie Medina and Lauren Falzone. Junior Lauren Hope ended the game moments later when she stroked a two-run double to center, allowing pinch runner Chloe Contreras and Medina to score.
Eight different Canisius players had a hit in the win over the Bearcats, with Hope and junior Paige Freiberger each recording a double in the victory. Freshman hurler Amanda Baun two scoreless innings where she struck out two to earn the win in relief, her sixth win of the season.
In the first game of the day, Canisius beat Army 10-2 in six innings on the power of 12 hits. Freiberger led the Canisius charge at the plate by going 2-for-2 with two homers, two runs scored and four RBIs. Freiberger started the scoring action in the top half of the first with a two-run homer, and then followed that with a two-run blast in the fourth frame. Lauren Hope, Lizzy Gatto, Michelle Fridey and Katie Lancellotti all had multiple hits in the win over the Black Knights, who fell to 0-1 on the season with the loss to the Griffs in their season-opener.
Baun came on in relief against Army and picked up the win after she allowed just one hit and fanned three in four innings of action.
Canisius will return to action Sunday at 9 a.m., when the team plays Binghamton on the final day of the Colonial Classic. The Griffs will wrap up their weekend stay in the nation's capital at 11 a.m., as the team takes on host George Washington.
