Swimming and Diving Announces Postseason Awardwinners

The Canisius College swimming and diving program announced its postseason awardwinners for the 2007-08 season and also announced the team's captains for the 2008-09 campaign at the team's postseason banquet Saturday.

Junior Kevin O'Donnell and sophomore Megan Smith earned Most Valuable Swimmer awards. O'Donnell lowered his school record in the 100 breaststroke and finished second in the conference in the 100 breaststroke for the second consecutive season. Smith set a school record in the 200 butterfly and was the fastest Golden Griffin in four events in 2007-08.

Senior Kaeli Abdo and junior Adam Salemi were honored as the Most Valuable Divers. Abdo, who set two school records during the season, was perfect in dual-meet events and finished third in the MAAC in the 3-meter and fourth in the 1-meter. Salemi led the Griffs' male diving team in his first season as a collegiate diver.

Senior Brendon Barker (pictured) was awarded the Coach's Award, as well as the “D-Force Award,” which goes to the Golden Griffin who dropped the most time in the distance freestyle events. Freshman Jack Kennon and Laura Quackenbush earned the Most Improved Swimmer awards as Kennon also earned the Rookie of the Year award.

Seniors Zack Jenkins and David Jefferys earned “The Griffin Award,” which goes to team members who show pride, heart and determination. Freshman Alex Vitale earned the “TNT Award” for her work in the strength and conditioning program, and Charlotte Scythes was honored with the Swimming Scholar Award.

Canisius will have four captains in 2008-09 ? Andrea Betts, Smith, O'Donnell and Salemi.
