Opening Pitch
  • The Canisius College softball team opens play in the NCAA Division I Softball Tournament this afternoon when the team meets No. 13 Virginia Tech at Buckeye Field in Columbus, Ohio.
  • The Golden Griffins won the 10th Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament championship in school history May 12, when the team beat Marist 2-0 at DeLuca Field in Stratford, Conn.
  • The MAAC Championship is the team's third crown in the last five years and 10th softball title in the last 15 years overall.
  • Canisius enters the national postseason with a 27-19 overall record.
  • The Blue and Gold have won eight straight and 17 of their last 19 games since being swept at league rival Fairfield April 1.
  • The 2007 Griffs became the first squad since the 1997 Canisius team to win both the MAAC regular season title and the MAAC Tournament crown in the same year. Canisius has claimed the MAAC regular season title in each of the last two years and 11 times overall since joining the league before the 1990 season.
  • Since joining the MAAC, the Griffs have played in 17 of 18 MAAC postseason events and advanced to the title game 14 times.
  • Canisius is now 49-15 all-time in MAAC Tournament play. No MAAC school has won as many conference postseason games as Canisius.
  • Canisius' 2-0 win over Marist May 12, was the team's fourth win over the Red Foxes this season. The last time the Griffs beat a team four times in one campaign was 1996 when the Blue and Gold beat long-time rival Niagara twice during the regular season and twice in the MAAC Tournament.
  • In eight previous NCAA Tournament appearances, the Golden Griffins boast a record of 4-17. Canisius is the only MAAC school to ever win a game in the NCAA Softball Tournament.
  • The last three previous NCAA trips (2002, 2004 and 2005) sent the Blue and Gold to Ann Arbor, Mich., where the Griffs have played Michigan three consecutive times in the first game.
