Swimming and Diving Finishes MAACs with Four More School Records


The men and women's swimming and diving teams set a combined four school records on the last day of the MAAC Championships and qualified two more swimmers for the ECAC meet at Loyola University in Baltimore Saturday. During the three-day meet, Canisius set 10 school records and had nine ECAC-qualifying times.


In the meet, the men's team finished eighth with a school-record 220 points while the women took ninth with 132 points. Marist won both the men and women's competitions with its men's team accumulating 884 points while the women's team had 821 points, which was 29 more than second-place Rider.


Freshman Kevin O'Donnell (Tonawanda, N.Y.) set a school record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:14.34, good enough for a seventh-place finish and spot in next week's ECAC meet. Freshman Adam Salemi (Grand Island, N.Y.) cut almost six seconds off his previous season best in the event.

Freshman Okan Oguz (West Seneca, N.Y.) set a school record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:24.38. Oguz and O'Donnell each set two individual school records on the weekend as well as being a part of two relays that set school records.


Sophomore Jessie Hall (Niagara, Falls, N.Y.) set her second school record on the weekend with a time of 2:36.08 in the 200 breaststroke. Hall's time was more than 3.5 seconds better than her preliminary time in the event. Freshman Elisabeth Burn (Springville, N.Y.) notched her school record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:24.38.

Sophomore Brendon Barker (Lockport, N.Y.) finished 14th in the 1,650 freestyle, cutting more than 56 seconds off his previous season best while junior Jon Sinski (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) cut more than 80 seconds off his previous season best and finished 15th. Sophomore Zack Jenkins (Springfield, Mass.) had a 48.58 in the 100 freestyle finishing ninth, and freshman Sean Carroll (Bentonville, Ark.) had a season-best time of 49.50. Jenkins' time qualified for the ECAC meet.


The Griffs will compete in the ECAC meet next weekend at Pittsburgh.
