ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Canisius College senior golfer Michael Carrig posted a two-round score of 140, highlighted by a
course record 67 in the first round, and fellow senior Mike Spiotta posted a two-round tally of 145 to help lead the
Golden Griffins to a third-straight Little Three Golf Championship Wednesday
afternoon at Harvest Hill Golf Course. Carrig, who followed his career-low
round of 67 with a one-over par 73, won the individual medalist title at this
year's event and has earned an automatic berth into the 2013 Porter Cup.
As a team, the Blue and Gold posted
team scores of 292 and 298 for a 36-hole total of 590 to give the Griffs their
third-straight championship over their local rivals. This marks the first time
in Canisius history the team has won three-straight Little Three Golf
Championships, which was played for the 58th time since 1952. St.
Bonaventure placed second in the team event with a team total of 599 and
Niagara took third with a team tally of 625.
With the tournament starting on the
back nine, Carrig started the day by going out in 35, highlighted by his birdie
on the par-5 18th hole. From there, the Buffalo, N.Y., native
birdied four of the next six holes, capped by back-to-back birds on the par-3
fifth hole and the par-5 sixth. He closed out his first round with a 32 to
record the 67, which is the lowest score for a Canisius golfer since Drew Creighton posted a school-record
low round of 65 at Montour Heights Country Club outside of Pittsburgh, Pa., on
Oct. 8, 2007. Carrig locked up the individual crown with a one-over par round
of 73 in the second round to secure his second appearance in the Porter Cup
next summer.
"I had a good round going early, I
was just playing par golf," Carrig said. "I got a birdie on nine that kind of
jump started my round and I ended up with birdies on five of the last 10 holes
in the morning. It means a lot to qualify for the Porter Cup. I played in it in
2010 and I hope to play better this time around. It is obviously a great
opportunity for me."
Spiotta finished second in the field
with his 145 for 36 holes, capped with an even-par round of 72 in the afternoon
session. Canisius freshman Hunter Sagar
took sixth overall after shooting 78-73-151 and fellow freshman Brendan Polsin tied for 12th
with his scores of 76-80-156. Josh Stauffer and defending Little Three
individual medalist Brian McKenna from St. Bonaventure tied for third in the
field for the Bonnies, while Niagara's Michael Jiggins shot 77-73-150 to earn
fifth-place honors.
"This is a blast, it is always fun
to get a win," Canisius head coach Todd
Hummel said. "A three-peat is nice and it shows our program is going in the
right direction. With Carrig winning the qualifier into the Porter Cup, it is
great to have a local guy from our team taking part in a great international
event. He missed it last year by a stroke or two, and he came out and took it
into his own hands today, which is great to see."
The Griffs will return to action Sept. 14-15
when the team travels to Lewisburg, Pa., to take part in the annual Bucknell
Invitational.
