The Canisius College golf team was
named to the Division I All-Academic Team list today, as the Golf Coaches
Association of America (GCAA) announced its 2012 Team Academic Awards,
presented by Farmers Insurance. Canisius was one of 125 schools honored for its
work in the classroom, and by posting a team grade point average of 3.5 or
better, the Golden Griffins were one of 11 programs to earn the President's
Special Recognition accolade.
This marks
the fourth-straight season Canisius has been honored by the CGAA, and this is
the second-straight year the Blue and Gold joined with Loyola (Md.) as the only
programs in the MAAC to be recognized for this honor.
To be
eligible for the GCAA's Division I All-Academic Team honor, a program must hold
a cumulative team grade point average of 3.00 or higher for the previous
academic year. DePaul was named the GCAA's Academic National Champion for the third-straight
year with a team GPA of 3.69.
This marks
the second major academic award for the golf program this summer, as the team
also received an NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program public
recognition award in June. The public recognition awards are presented to the
best academically-performing teams that rank in the top-10 percent within their
sports in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).
Canisius
will start the fall portion of its 2012-13 season Sept. 2-3 when the Griffs
take part in the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate Tournament at the Turning
Stone Resort in Verona, N.Y.
