Canisius senior pitcher Mallory Aldred tossed a two-hit shutout and sophomore Lauren Hope went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored as the Golden Griffins defeated Buffalo 3-0 Friday in the first game of the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va. In the night cap, Canisius posted just two hits and lost to the host Thundering Herd 10-1 in five innings. The Griffs are now 3-3 on the year.
Aldred went the distance and fanned a career-high 15 batters in the win as the Blue and Gold snapped a two-game losing streak. Buffalo was credited with two singles on the day and had only two base runners reach second base in the loss. Canisius plated a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning and then took a 3-0 lead in the fifth after Hope, who led off the frame with her first triple of the season, crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Norton.
In the second game of the day, Marshall (8-6) scored three times in the home half of the first, highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of freshman Rebecca Gamby. The Herd crossed the plate five times in the bottom of the fourth and then ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when Rachael Sofie drilled a two-run homer to left center.
Hope went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI in the loss to Marshall, while senior Angela Turrey added a base hit for the Griffs as well.
Canisius will return to action Saturday when the team meets Delaware and Marshall on the second day of the three-day Marshall Invitational. First pitch against the Delaware Blue Hens is set for 11 a.m.
