Softball Drops a Pair at Wolfpack Challenge

The Canisius College softball team dropped both of its games Friday on the first day of the Wolfpack Challenge, hosted by North Carolina State in Raleigh, N.C. The Golden Griffins (2-2) fell in the first game to cross-town rival Buffalo 2-1 in eight innings before being tripped up by NC State 7-0 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Canisius jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second against Buffalo (3-2) when freshman Katie Lancellotti doubled to left center to drive in teammate Paige Freiberger. The Bulls knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh after the Griffs were charged with two errors and Dena Carter knocked in Kristin Waldron with an RBI-single to center. Canisius was unable to score in the top of the extra frame and Buffalo sealed the win in the bottom of the eighth when Lindsey Hampton came around to score from second base after the ball got way from the Griffs' infield and rolled out-of-play into the third-base dugout.

Canisius was credited with four hits in the first game loss to UB, with Lancellotti claiming the only extra-base hit for the Blue and Gold. Senior Mallory Aldred came on in relief and took the loss for Canisius. Juliette Bowers allowed two runs, both unearned, and fanned seven in seven innings of work.

In the nightcap, Canisius managed just two hits as NC State (4-6) posted a 7-0 win. Freiberger and Michelle Fridey each had a hit in the game as the host Wolfpack scored twice in the fourth and five times in the home-half of the sixth inning. Aldred took the loss in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she allowed four runs on five hits to go with a strikeout and a walk in five innings. NC State's Allison Presnell had two homers and four RBIs in the win for NC State, while teammate Lindsay Campana fanned seven in the complete-game victory.

The Griffs will return to action Saturday with two more games in the Wolfpack Challenge. Canisius will play Notre Dame and St. John's, with first pitch against the Fighting Irish set for 9 a.m.

Game Notes: The game against North Carolina State was the first in school history... Lancellotti has five RBIs in her first four collegiate games... The 7-0 loss to North Carolina State was the Griffs' first shutout loss in 40 regular season games, dating back to last season... Canisius is 2-3 in its last five extra-inning games, dating back to last year.
