Pickard’s Late Tally Pushes Women’s Soccer Past Broncs

Junior Ava Pickard scored in the 89th minute to break a scoreless deadlock and lift Canisius to a 1-0 victory over Rider in Metro Conference women's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Pickard struck with 67 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Golden Griffins (4-4-0, 1-2-0 Metro) to their first league win of the season. Freshman keeper Alexa Turmel made three saves to earn her third shutout of the season.

Ashley Moore finished with three saves in goal for the Broncs (1-4-1, 0-3-0 Metro).

With the game in a scoreless deadlock in the final minutes of regulation, Canisius earned a free kick just outside of the box. Senior Jessica Whitaker placed the ensuing kick to the right side of the Rider goal that Moore was able to make a save, but the rebound landed at the feet of Pickard, who chipped the ball into the cage to give the Griffs the lead.

Earlier in the contest, Rider had its best scoring chance of the contest in the 30th minute when Tess Ferrie got a clean look at the goal from the middle of the box, only to see Turmel make a diving save to keep the game scoreless.
